About
The Pediatrics Residency Program implements Competence-Based Medical Education (CBME) and Competence-Based Design (CBD), ensuring compliance with RCPSC and PGME requirements.
Competence by Design is the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada’s version of Competency Based Medical Education (CBME). It is a hybrid design of CBME and the traditional time-based education. All Canadian residency programs will be changing to CBD. More information on CBD can be found at

We try to focus on the following basic principles:
- Training and evaluation of acquired skills in accordance with CBD
- Doctors involved in the educational process should be represented by teachers of the Department of Pediatrics and other departments of KSMU
- Residency in pediatrics should provide sufficient experience in core general Pediatrics and in the various Pediatric subspecialties, in both inpatient and outpatient settings, as well as opportunities for individual and elective training.
This residency program is for 4 year(s).
Program length of training does not exceed the Royal College or College of Family Physicians of Canada standard.
The core curriculum meets the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada standards for accreditation in paediatrics. After three years of core training, residents may choose to pursue a fourth year in general paediatrics or may choose to apply for training in a paediatric subspecialty. The program's specific objectives are as follows:
This period must include:
- Three (3) years of core Pediatrics
- One (1) years of advanced Pediatrics training
(in Pediatrics, designed by the resident and program director to reflect the resident′s career plans ore clinical residency in any of subspecialty areas of Pediatrics).
CBD Stages
Residency will continue being 4 years. It will be split into 4 stages:
- Transition to Discipline (TTD) 3 Months in PGY-1
- Foundations of Discipline (FOD) 9 Months in PGY-1
- Core of Discipline (COD) 15 Month in PGY-2, PGY-3
- Transition to Practice (TTP) 1 year PGY-4
The Royal College Exam will take place after the Core stage at the end of PGY 4 (instead of at the end of residency). The RCPSC will be providing more information in the coming years.

First year (PGY-1)
The first year focuses on learning about the typical child, variations of normal and recognition of the sick patient.
The PGY-1 completes all orders, admission histories, physical exams and management decisions, but all are reviewed by supervisory senior residents.
Second year (PGY-2)
- This year is designed to provide paediatric subspecialty experience in paediatric cardiology, developmental paediatrics, endocrinology, gastroenterology/clinical nutrition, oncology, nephrology, neurology, respirology, rheumatology, and neonatal intensive care.
- A core focus of the PGY-2 year is obtaining proficiency at assessing and managing critically ill children. PGY-2 have experience in the PICU and the NICU.
- On the inpatient floors, PGY-2 take on a leadership role equivalent to that of PGY-3, which includes supervision and teaching of interns and medical students.
In the Emergency Department and the outpatient clinics, the PGY-2 has the opportunity for increased autonomy.
Third year (PGY-3)
This year provides graded responsibility and supervisory experiences in a CTU setting on the general paediatric unit, emergency room medicine, neonatal-perinatal medicine and ambulatory experience. In addition, there are experiences in the paediatric intensive care unit as well as experiences in the emergency management and resuscitation of acutely unwell patients.
