On January 14, 2021, at the Center for Practical Skills (CPS) of KSMU, an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) was for the first time held for the Neurology Program resident and for the residents of the Department of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Medical Genetics.

Neurology Residency Program faculties had prepared seven examination clinical stations to conduct the OSCE:

  1. Collection of complaints and anamnesis, deontology;
  2. Syndromology;
  3. Practical skills;
  4. Diagnostic Plan;
  5. Diagnostic methods (interpretation);
  6. Test (multiple choice questions);
  7. The task of formulating a diagnosis.

At the signal, the examinees proceeded to the task of the corresponding station. The examiners evaluated the performance of the task according to the checklists, which were developed specifically for each station. 15 minutes were allotted to complete the task at each station. At the end of this time, all examinees stopped completing the task and simultaneously moved to the next station.

All examination rooms of the CPS are equipped with simulation technologies to perform practical skills, as well as video equipment, which allows the OSCE to be conducted in accordance with international standards.

Considering that the Neurology Residency Program is implemented in two languages at KSMU, all examination materials had been also prepared in two languages: Russian and English. The resident had possibility to use both options as he saw fit.

After the end of the OSCE, a feedback session was held for trainees and faculties. Points for further growth for residents and mechanisms for OSCE conduction improving for faculties had been identified.

In general, the Team of the Neurology Residency Program obtained a great satisfaction with participation in organization and delivering OSСE.
